Watch a video with new Hyperdub signee Laurel Halo

In the world of experimental electronic music, the name Ina Cube sounds like the perfect alias for abstract beats and sounds. But that didn’t stop the 25-year-old Ms. Cube (so it says on her drivers’ license) from choosing the stage name of Laurel Halo to accompany her gritty fusion of samples and noise, and melodic piano and vocals.

The classically trained Ann Arborite first came to our attention last year with the stirring and melodic Hour Logic EP on Hippos In Tanks, which was followed up by the FRKWYS VOl. 7 release, a more ambient affair produced with a five-person synth ensemble for the always esoteric RVNG imprint. Her debut album, Quarantine, comes June 5th, courtesy of the renowned Hyperdub label, home to such dubstep innovators as Kode9 and Burial. But Halo takes a different approach to her music, which we can see on this episode of Pitchfork Weekly. The clip shows the composer creating a sound that combines her penchants for melody and noise on a minimalistic studio setup (sans laptop) inside a lovely home library while discussing her various inspirations and methods.
